Bob Worley Favorites
Here is a list of just some of the books Bob mentioned during our Chapter meeting held in February of 2016.
There are two sources that Bob feels stand out amongst fly fishing literature. While they have been out of print for decades they are still available on Amazon. Those are:
The Fishing in Print—Arnold Gingrich. Gingrich was the founding editor/publisher of Esquire magazine. Easily available used via Amazon.
Trout—Ernest Schwiebert. The definitive work on trout fishing in two volumes and over 1800 pages. Somewhat difficult to find, and expensive. (As of 2/9/2016 this book was available on Amazone for around $125.00)
Then there is a list of Bob's favorites in no particular order:
This Wonderful World of Trout—Charles Fox. One of my heroes in fly fishing. A collection of tales.
The Longest Silence—Thomas McGuane. A novelist who fishes. This is a collection of fishing writing.
Tying and Fishing the Fuzzy Nymphs—E. H. ‘Polly” Rosborough. Tying subsurface flies for big western fish.
The Fly and the Fish—John Atherton. Impressionistic fly patterns and fishing tales from an artist Anatomy of a Murder—Robert Traver. A novel from a writer who fished. Anything by Traver is a gem and he wrote several fishing titles.
Simple Fly Fishing—Yvon Chouinard, et. al. A new how-to blending Tenkara and traditional rod and reel techniques. Back to the basics.
Trout—Ernest Schwiebert. Massive, definitive and a great reference.
The Nick Adams Stories—Ernest Hemingway. Big Two Hearted River appears in this collection. Great stories
The Well-Tempered Angler—Arnold Gingrich. Great stories from the founding publisher of Esquire. Drops a lot of names.
A River Never Sleeps—Roderick Haig-Brown. Classic book, among many, from Haig-Brown a fishing conservationist.
The Sporting Club—Thomas McGuane. A wacky early novel from McGuane about guides in the Florida Keys. Insane and gonzo.
The English Major—Jim Harrison. A fine poet and novelist. Fly fishing runs throughout his work. This is a fairly recent book from him.
A River Runs Through It—Norman McLean. A fine novella made into a movie that changed fly fishing for trout in our time.
